Holidays like Memorial Day usually bring a surge in cargo theft when unattended trucks and closed warehouses are more common.

Beware of Cargo Theft This Labor Day Weekend

Trucks are also parked longer due to limited hours at shippers and receivers during holiday weekends such as Memorial Day.

Medallion Transport & Logistics has some tips to prevent break-ins and cargo theft.

  • Never park your tractor-trailer in odd, risky places
  • Avoid leaving equipment unattended, especially in metropolitan areas
  • Plan to rest in a well-lit area with controlled access and adequate lighting
  • Always lock van-trailer doors
  • Confirm receivers’ hours of operation during the weekend line up with scheduled delivery times and plan for any holiday oversize travel restrictions
  • Don’t drop a trailer at a location other than a secured, approved facility
  • Watch for vehicles that may be following you for extended periods of time
  • Be aware of any fraudsters planning strategic theft
  • Above all, stay in communication

If you’re hauling a load over the weekend, stay in contact with shipper/receiver facilities to confirm holiday hours of operation, especially for loads with scheduled delivery from Friday, May 23 through Monday, May 26.
