The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will be conducting another roadside inspection event with the goal of capturing data on rear impact guards, also referred to as underride guards, on trailers and semi-trailers in the United States during the week of August 27-31.
According to a news release published on July 31, the organization said each state’s commercial motor vehicle law enforcement department may select one day of that week to capture the data.
The CVSA promotes safety and inspection, and enforcement uniformity throughout North America. The organization is often asked to weigh in on policies related to safety and enforcement and in order to do so, the alliance is collecting information on rear impact guards in order to be well informed and properly equipped to assess and address rear impact safety requirements on CMVs.
According to the CVSA release, the Stop Underrides Act of 2017 was recently introduced to reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries caused by underride crashes and to improve motor carrier and passenger motor vehicle safety.
The bill amended federal transportation law to require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to require the installation of rear underride guards that meet a specified performance standard on all trailers, semi-trailers and single unite trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds.
The data collected during the Rear Impact Guard Check safety initiative will be reported to the CVSA Vehicle Committee at the CVSA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Kansas City, Missouri, in September. Based on that data, the committee will make a recommendation to the CVSA Board of Directors on how to proceed with this important issue.
