According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the restriction is from 37 tons to 33 tons and while they were posted Thursday, Dec. 27 they were effective immediately.
The reason for the weight limit is to make some necessary repairs to floor beams and a pier cap on the bridge, which will begin sometime in March of April 2019, according to the IL DOT. No completion date is currently available.
The weight restriction is not expected to be lifted until the repair work is complete.
A recent inspection found that some floor beams and a pier cap need to be repaired.
The goal is to start working on those repairs in March or April of 2019.
The Cairo Bridge is a steel truss bridge carrying U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 62 across the Mississippi River.
